Cold Cream Story: Der Anfang der Kosmetik
Particularly impressive is the long tradition of cold cream. Because even if the name may sound very modern, the history of the famous wonder cream goes back to the 2nd century AD. What makes the cream so famous? We explain it to you.
Was ist eine Cold Cream?
The history of Cold Cream goes back to a long and impressive history. Already Empress Sissi swore by the effect of the cream. No wonder, because she is a true all-rounder and versatile. You can apply them to the face, hands, and body. Everywhere where your skin needs a bit more care. A cold cream is a particularly rich and protective ointment for dry skin. Their special formulation ensures that even demanding areas of skin are sustainably cared for, redness and feelings of tension subside. Many use it in winter, when the skin is particularly dry and stressed by the change in temperature and the heating air. But of course you can use them anytime and according to the individual needs of your skin
What makes a cold cream so special?
The recipe!
The original formulation of the cold cream consisted mainly of water, beeswax, olive oil and – for a calming effect – rose petal extract. Characteristic of the cream is also its white color, which results from water retention in the fat / wax base. Over the years, the recipe has been changed, refined and optimized. To make the cream even richer, among other things, the water content was reduced and replaced by glycerol. The olive oil is often exchanged for other vegetable or mineral oils (petroleum-based) and the beeswax can for example be replaced by vegan waxes. In addition, sometimes the mineral borax is added, which provides a disinfecting effect. However, whatever the formulation of a cold cream composed, the functioning has remained. For example, a cold cream is always a rich care that absorbs quickly and provides the skin with lasting moisture
Woher kommt der Name Cold Cream?
The “cold” of cold cream is derived from the feeling of cold that one feels when applied to the skin. In France, the cream also bears the name “Cerat de Galien”, which goes back to its inventor – the Greek doctor Galenos. Galenos of Pergamon, also called Aelius Galenus, was a predominantly active in Rome Greek physician, who lived in the 2nd century AD. He is – after Hippocrates – as the most important physician of antiquity. The so-called galenic goes back to him. The theory of the composition and preparation or production of medicines. He considered that a medicinal substance would only become a medicinal substance if it was added to a special dosage form (eg tablets, juices or creams) by means of adjuvants and thus can be administered to the patient without any problems. Thus, the invention of Cold Cream came about, which should cause by their special composition healing in damaged skin.
Die Cold Cream und ihre berühmten Anwender
Not only by its reputed inventor the Cold Cream gained worldwide fame but also by the people who have used the cream. That was (among other things) none other than Empress Sisi, who is known for her extensive care ritual. The Austrian Empress swore on the care cream and changed the recipe individually according to her preferences. She is said to have used wax, rosewater and spermaceti (a fat derived from sperm whales) as well as almond and sesame oil. In addition, Sisi used the cream as the basis for her sunscreen and added zinc and talc. Literary notoriety also gained the Cold Cream by Thomas Mann’s novel “The Magic Mountain”. In the novel, the cream is applied, inter alia, after a wet shave to relieve the so-called razor burn. In addition, it is intended to remedy climatic conditions of heating and flushing. And Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary also uses cold cream for her skin.
